Semi-seriously though, I believe the attitude expressed explains quite a bit about the difference between American and European culture (at least some places in Europe).

It's common among European elites and academics to say "Americans are individualistic and Europeans cooperative". But the reality is we wouldn't have built clean water systems, decent electrical grids, roads, bridges and some of the biggest private companies in the world if we were so individualistic.

The big difference is Americans have a far greater propensity for *doing together* without getting their marching orders from big brother government. Many in Europe seem paralyzed to solve societal problems unless the central government gets involved.
