Oh, I've offered my diagnosis, you just don't wish to accept it. It's all downhill.

As for Abbas and Arafat, it was perfectly clear from the beginning that the only way for Abbas to have sufficient legitimacy to go after Hamas, and the others, regardless of what Arafat did, was for the negotiations with Sharon to produce enough "stuff" to increase his legitimacy.

I don't see Arafat as the problem you do. I see rather that Sharon and Bush are asking the Palestinian leadership to start a civil war while offering them nothing tangible in return, just the promise of something. That's well beyond dumb.
