Incomplete Norton AV Scan

mr.mark,

<< you can disable scanning within compressed files #reply -18526415 ... you can also add the file to the exclusion list >>

Thanks. Makes sense, although have you ever seen an explanation of why this "stall" occurs, and whether or not it indicates some corruption in either a compressed file or a corruption in NAV?

I was going to try excluding the drive and scan the other logical drives or exclude the folder which is filled with CABs, but hadn't thought of turning off scanning compressed files which I'll do in that drive after scanning the other drives.

I'll do this between now and tomorrow and report back.

I might add that I'm working right now on a problem that reared its very ugly head at about the same time as this Norton AV problem. It involves Outlook Express v. 6 (latest rev) and Adobe Acrobat Reader 6. I won't bore you with all the gory details but at high level I can't open PDF attachments or save them to file (consistently) and I can't (usually) successfully send a PDF attachment. I've moved all .dbx files out of the message store, reopened OE to rebuild the file structure and imported em back. It's rather weird because symptoms sort of come and go. There is some obvious corruption somewhere. [And yes, I've flagged off the Tools | Security option in OE relating to attachments.]

My next step is to completely uninstall Adobe Acrobat Reader 6 and reinstall, although recent defs in one of the spyware/adware utilities could be causing this.

Have you ever seen a tool (Adobe Acrobat Reader specific) to remove all traces of Adobe Acrobat from the registry but not other Adobe registry entries?

I can't find one so will probably use RegCleaner unless I bump across a more specific tool.

Best,

- Eric -
