I've mentioned this here before, but I still think that there is a superior model available for Moderated threads...one that accomplishes the same purpose with few overtones of censorship.

The idea is to turn the moderators' action into a filter rather than a deletion. By default, users would see the thread as per the moderator's suggested track. By default, new posts would remain on the moderated track unless moved by the moderator to the "alternate" track. The moderator would retain the right to limit posters to the alternate track but never to silence opinions in their entirety.

It would then be up to the reader to determine whether to stay on the moderated track or follow alternate posts when desired. The system might even be opened up to additional tracks (controlled by the moderator or others) such as "Key Posts", "Faqs" etc..

Of course, posts that violate the TOS should always be removed by the admin according to site policy.
