That was/is EXACTLY the point.

Shalom is telling us that the "life" of his son
meant more to Him than His relationship with God.

His son in that case becomes an Idol.

God ordains a lot of suffering.

Just read the book of Job - the oldest book I have heard.

We know that God can rain 'manna' from heaven if He chooses
but chooses rather to let 'innocent' children starve to death.

Shalom may struggle with all of these things forever.

Shalom may die an enemy of Christ.

Shalom may however be elect and return for forgiveness.

"With God all things are possible"
