I know you said it was not what you were looking for, but the observation was too good to pass up.

Generally, to take seriously an explanation, there has to be some evidence of its connection to the thing to be explained.

I had a semester of evolutionary biology in college. How many philosophy courses did you take?

We were discussing whether he was floating a theory of evolutionary benefit. My comment was in that context. No benefit was demonstrated, to the species as a whole. Rather, a strange "quirk" of mDNA was suggested to explain why the trait had not died out. In the context of asserted benefit, my characterization, underscoring the ridiculousness of saying that it was a contribution to the species, was perfectly legitimate.
