Bank of Japan Upgrades Its Assessment of Economy

By HIROSHI INOUE
DOW JONES NEWSWIRES

TOKYO -- The Bank of Japan Tuesday upgraded its assessment of the economy, citing signs of an improving export environment and a moderate recovery in capital spending.

The upgrade, in its September report, is the first by the central bank since July and follows a recent string of strong economic data and an upgrade last week by the government of its economic view.

"Economic activity still continues to be virtually flat as a whole although signs of improvement have been observed in such areas as the environment for exports," the central bank said.

In its August report, the BOJ said that economic activity remained virtually flat.
