That's very interesting. And sad in a way.

A few years ago, I was helping an old friend interview candidates for a management job at his small company. The best candidate seemed to be a black man whom everybody liked very much. When my friend, who has several african american friends, didn't hire the black man, we were all stunned. I went to him to ask why. He then explained his version of the real world. Yes, the black man was at least equal to the white man he hired. But... if he later needed to lay off or fire the employee down the road, he didn't want to be faced with the hassle of dealing with false charges of racism. Easy to hire, hard to fire, he explained.

How many small businesses have the same practice?
