my guess is that the new contract will allow for whatever plant slowdowns or closings will be necessary to eventually work the inventory down

the union has basically said what matters more is health benefits for the workers that remain, they obviously understand the overcapacity issue and have to deal with the economic reality of oversupply and understand that workers will have to go..

think of it as throwing the weaker guys off the lifeboat to sustain viability

i'm sure they're thrilled to walk away with health care
