Real wood is, IMO, always the best choice in the long run.

Pergo may be more expensive than some less costly wood floors. I don't know. We chose white oak, which is more expensive than red oak but quite a bit harder and more durable.

Ran across a discussion site which seemed to be in agreement that solid wood is most expensive, engineered wood next, and laminates like Pergo cheapest. But it may depend on the area-- whether you have solid wood sources nearby or it has to be shipped in from a ways away. Also, installation costs have to be considered.

You're right, though. Wood floors will last a lifetime, with reasonable care and refinishing every decade or so if needed.

I forgot why we got into this -- were you thinking of redoing your floors? Or was this in the Arizona house because of termites?
