And for the US part, this admin often plays the role of a stern parent in the 1950s/1960s mode, handling a rebellious child. Clinton earlier had played the part of the 1970s parent who smoked dope with his kids, i am afraid, so the difference between admins is sharper than need be and it probably exacerbates the situation.
No matter, Germany will find its way and I am convinced it will have democracy, but not Schroeder/Schroederism at its core. And the US will ultimately learn to deal with its children as equals. Hell, I learned to do that with my own kids, so it shouldnt be too hard. And I think German rebellion against the US has its roots not in FP matters but in domestic ones, primarily the failure to elect Milton Friedman as Chancellor<g> and renounce the over reliance on the welfare state and socialism. There has to be an element of jealousy in seeing the US economy rebound while socialist Europe remains in an economic quagmire of its own making. Especially so given that krugmanomics has many fans abroad as well as at the NY Times and in John M's home. Mike
