Hawk, I did state "...The Geneva Convention and the UN charter probably ought to be looked at as evolving agreements..."

Do you feel a disagreement with that?

Of course not, Kumar..

But I think the UN should FIRST enforce the current charter before we opt to give them more power. And it's going to require certain members to be more responsible and objective, rather than using the UN to pursue their petty self-interests.

For example, the UN voted to censor Israel for threatening to kill Arafat. The US wanted to support the resolution, but could not get anyone to agree to ALSO censoring Hamas and other groups who have been just as guilty of reckless and violent threats and actions.

IMO, that should be a "no-brainer", if the UN was REALLY serious about creating peace in Palestine.

But no... 11 members of the UN conspired to pursue a biased resolution, which would have amounted to a statement of unconditional international support for Arafat, without bothering to chastise him for derailing the peace process, rendering Abbas politically irrelevant, or to present a perspective that he must DO MORE to rein in those militant elements who are hiding amongst the PA population.

A beautiful moment where the UN could have effectively admonshed BOTH SIDES for moving towards peace, wasted on partisan politics...
