Don,

America seems to be in the grip of a vast national delusion regarding how we vote. As Mike Bone mentioned, Canada uses paper ballots, which are also the norm in Europe.

Thom Hartmann (http://www.thomhartmann.com) commented yesterday that he lived in Germany for a year. They vote with paper ballots there. On election night, German results are called based on exit polls. The actual count is accomplished in about 4 days.

Here in the U.S., with our new electronic voting devices, Voter News Service (VNS) had to disband exit polling because it wasn't matching the electronic results. This ought to be a huge red flag for those who are concerned about the proprietary nature of electronic voting system software.

VNS has also recently been disbanded in mysterious circumstances.
