I did this one with my bike club back when I was 26 and it nearly killed me. You do the entire drive from Front Royal to Waynesboro the first day and the next day you go back for a total mileage of 222. The first 22 miles are almost unrelentingly up. I can remember thinking to myself, "How embarrassing would it be to just turn my bike around here and how long would the embarrassment last as opposed to the pain I'm about to endure?" The views are spectacular from the look outs but you feel like you're going to puke by the time you get to them.

The bikers all stayed at the same motel in Waynesboro and there is a big group meal where obscene amounts of food are ingested. I remember telling a friend I was doing the ride before I did it. He'd ridden on the drive before. He said it's all up. I said, it can't be all up, it has to be half up and half down. Then he said, "But the up takes forever and down goes by really fast." He was right, I clocked 45 mph on some of those long downhills and got so cold I found myself wishing for the up to resume.

I have several friends who do the Drive every year, both directions in one long day. They start out with head lamps in the dark. They are animals!
