"You used the word, conscience. Is this what he's taking a stand on, this opinion? You don't take stands on opinions, you take them on principles. That opinion of his isn't what this conscience thing is about, is it?"

His conscience bothered him because the conventions of society seem to be to just keep quite. He 'believes' people are harmed by the compromises presented in the setting. He is supported by data. He loves his work and made a public statement, knowing that he risks the opprobrium of society and a possible law suit from radical leftists.

So, he is taking a stand, he is swimming against the tide and risking serious legal battles. It is based on his concern for being forthright in his behavior and ethics of operation...that is a matter of conscience...It is also a matter of principle, opinion, consideration, thoughtfulness, etc. Conscience is that faculty that enjoins and activates all of these, occasionally resulting in 'taking a stand'.
