Who needs WTO? Not China's women
Study says cheaper agricultural imports would force men to look for jobs in cities, forcing women to take on more farmwork

By Goh Sui Noi

BEIJING - China's entry into the World Trade Organisation (WTO) in 2001 may mean more economic opportunities for the country, but it would also lead to greater inequalities between men and women, a study has shown.

With surplus labour being created in the agricultural sector as China opens its markets to cheaper foreign farm products after WTO entry, the men will flock to the cities to look for jobs, leaving the women to take on more work on the farms.
