Here's the latest scoop:

United Nations Iraq -- Security Office
September 16, 2003
General: The trends identified in the security situation over the past days continue to develop in the direction previously identified- a high level of attacks against C.F. and high number of C.F. search operations and raids in the Central and Baghdad Regions. Anti C.F. continue to target civilian facilities of general/public interests.

Baghdad and surrounding regions including the Western Desert: Twenty-two security incidents were reported in Baghdad Region and, twelve occurred into Baghdad City. Out of them twelve were involving the use of IEDs including ten for Baghdad City only. The threat from IED devices on the main road s around Baghdad remains current and there is a danger of explosive devices on the City streets concealed in everyday objects and debris. Explosive devises could be found in any innocuous object and debris – from soda cans and various garbages, to dead domestic animals or artificial legs. Recent attack have show a trend in the use of two IEDs exploding at interval, first explosion stop the targeted objective, then when the rescue party arrive the second IED is detonated targeting as well the paramedics, the Explosive Ordinance Disposal team and the Soldiers securing the area. It is also frequently reported that the initial; explosion of an IED is followed by small arms and/or RPGs fire. Staffs are strictly recommended to immediately vacate the scene of any security incident and to avoid travelling in an area where a recent attack has been reported.

Staff should avoid using “fresh” short cuts going trough central separation between two roads lanes or cutting corner as the nature of the soil in such kind of place are very soft and will permit to easily install and camouflage an IED/landmine with the guaranteed that the passage will be frequently used by target of opportunity. I.E. the passage over the separation between the two roads passing North-East of the U.N. compound in Canal Hotel.

IED: Improvised Explosive Devices, of any size and could be booby-traped, and then if you do not know what is it: do not touch it. If you doubt of what is it: do not touch it. If you know what is it but it is not YOU who have put it there: do not touch it.
