Abraham lincoln suspended parts of the Bill of Rights during his term and was incredibly criticized for the extraordinairy casualties being suffered by the North in the Civil War. Last time I checked he has a monument on the mall in DC. The Federals didn't have to invade the Southern States. The Southern States didn't invade the North. The Feds could have easily said, OK you seceeded, seeya later. No, Abraham Lincoln was determined to accomplish a noble goal that was going to be a very difficult battle. That takes guts. George Washington took a lot of criticism for his initial handling of the war against the Brits, the costs of the war, and the casualties, and he also has a monument on the Mall.
