Hi B-Fred,
Are you sure about being "willingly" fooled? I certainly agree the American majority is being fooled and herded to the cesspool, but the only people I know who are willingly fooled are those who gather in religious establishments.

The American majority is different, I suggest. They are being fooled about distant enemies. The line is that these enemies hate the US because it is a democracy. Somehow these enemies don't bother with other countries that lay claim to being democratic. Joe6P is not aware of these other countries. He can be infinitely fooled about distant lands and distant enemies. Joe6P also doesn't realize that the deterioration of elementary school education means that his children will have a lower standard of living when they are old enough to be counted as part of the work force. That is a phenomenon remote, not in space, but in time.
But he probably won't fall for being told that everything is all right here and now, thanks to the wise policies of the Republicans when he sees his job in danger.

I don't think that the herded to the cesspool phenomenon is special to empires. Serbia in recent times was herded to the cesspool by Milosevic, without being an empire. In the substantial or complete absence of democracy and in the presence of recently caused hatreds or historically existing hatreds incitement to catastrophic actions is always possible.
The hope is that some rich people who own media will see that the emperor lacks clothes and their business will lack profits as long as Bush & Co. are around; they then will give some publicity to the facts about Iraq and the perpetration of lies thereabout etc. etc. Coupled with job insecurity it's still possible that there can be a change in political party and a policy shift in 2005. Possible but how probable? Who knows? Meanwhile careful investment OUTSIDE of the U.S. and gold and selling some gold stock puts etc. provide a so far relatively consistent return.
