Do you mean by that the American public believes this. (I don't think you can find even an internet cite which claims that most Americans think this.)

I think you mean to say that, among weird conspiracy theorists, this is the more popular.

Actually, I kind of like Gus' approach when analyzing weird conspiracy theories. If he can prove that Russia, France and Israel can even agree on which restaurant to visit, I think he may be closer than the other conspiracy nuts.
