GSM1X advantage. I am just guessing, but it seems to me that the hybred system will allow the GSM equipment to be utilized as a voice system for its full economic life in all geographic areas and perhaps indefinitely in low density geographic areas where the cost/benefit ratio is poor for building out 1X. AT the same time, subscribers can be sold all the new value added dataproducts that work on 1x or EVDO. Seen in this way, UNICOM has the advantage of using its GSM equipment for years for voice. Unicum can simply focus on building out the 1X network. I BELIEVE I HAVE READ that its competitors must trash their GSM base stations and phones to install GPRS and trash it again to install WCDMA. These forklift upgrades are expensive and go on for years. Unicom can install GSM1X equipment for a presumably small capital expense.
