Propitious7, This is my understanding of Qualcomm’s GSM1X technology.

1. With the MSM6300 equipped GSM1X handset (dual mode GSM/GPRS and CDMA20001x) alone, without the GSM1X infrastructure, the GSM subs (60M approx) can access the Unicom CDMA2000 1x network and immediately avail themselves of all the benefits of 3G CDMA- higher speed data services including BREW applications, gpsOne position location, etc, etc.

It is my understanding that Unicom will not be upgrading their GSM network with GPRS and intends that their GSM subs obtain their higher speed data services from CDMA.

Additionally, the GSM subs with the dual mode handset can roam to the S. Korea CDMA networks.

Kyocera is the only vendor to date that I’m aware of that has announced a GSM1X phone. I recently read that the 2nd phase of the Unicom GSM1x trial will be using these Kyocera phones.

2. By adding GSM1x infrastructure equipment onto the existing GSM network, Unicom will be able to increase network capacity up to approximately 1.7 times depending upon the number of GSM1x handsets in use that replace the old GSM only handsets.

It is my understanding that older GSM only handsets will continue to work on the GSM network upgraded with GSM1X infrastructure.

I have no idea of the number of base stations on either the Unicom GSM or CDMA networks, but I doubt that the number follows the ratio of subs as CDMA1x is supposedly several times more spectrally efficient than GSM.

Unicom is currently in phase 3 of their CDMA build out, increasing CDMA capacity to 50M subs. I would imagine that they are also in this process expanding coverage so as to include most all areas where GSM currently exists.

Hope this helps- jim
