What makes it a GSM1x handset is that is capable of adressing an inserted GSM SIM or R-UIM, and it can thus authenticate to the GSM CN while communicating over a 1xRTT RAN attached to that CN and the R-UIM can be provisioned OTA and a subscriber can take advantage of a full range of data services when he is on the 1xRTT network. The handset can not communicate over the GSM BSS in an area that has no CDMA coverage, but the R-UIM can be removed and inserted in a GSM mobile in that situation. - Eric -
