Are you suggesting that they (the RIAA) should discriminate when filing these suits?

I'm saying the RIAA is putting another nail in its coffin by filing suit against individuals. May as well cry and file suit against the Sun for rising in the East.

It is stealing. No doubt. RIAA isn't going to stop it. Impossible. What they should be doing is adapting and providing legal outlets for people to purchase and download music. I don't have any stake in the argument - I buy my CDs. But there are two segments to the music downloaders. First, the music lovers who are exploiting a new technology to obtain music, but who would and do buy the music. And second, music lovers who are exploiting a new technology to obtain music, who wouldn't pay money at any price. You can serve the former, the latter are a fixed loss cost. If it wasn't for file sharing, the latter segment would be dubbing tapes, taping their music off the radio, or stealing CDs out of music stores.

The heart of the copyright problem is distribution. It is legal to make a copy for your own use. It becomes illegal when you attempt to distribute that copy to others. There is a "royalty tax" on CD-R Audio and DAT tapes in the US, and Canada for instance taxes all CD-Rs. Perhaps part of the solution would be a royalty tax regime on hard drives, or an Internet connection tax, that would satisfy the royalty expectations of artists like prior mediums have.
