MIAMI - A U.S. army Islamic chaplain who worked at the Guantanamo base in Cuba has been detained as part of a military investigation.

Capt. Yousef Lee, 34, advised the 660 prisoners the U.S. is holding in Cuba on religious matters, and also taught U.S. troops about Islam.

The prisoners are suspected of links to al-Qaeda or the former Taliban regime in Afghanistan. Some of them have been held and interrogated two years without charges.

Military and FBI officials would not say why Lee was detained, but The New York Times reported he had been carrying details about the layout of the prison, and CNN said he had lists of prisoners and interrogators.

He was detained Sept. 10 in Jacksonville, Fla., after coming back from Cuba. He has not been charged.

James Yee was born Christian but converted to Islam in 1991 and changed his first name.
