<<US should carry out structural reforms, encourage education (especially of macro/micro economics, and exchange currency regimes), reintroduce family values and refresh on work ethic, reinvigorate democracy, be pro-enterprise,...>>
That's what I was expecting in 2000 - 2001. Unfortunately all hopes and concepts were political with a whimper of push for it. The primary agenda in the 21st century America is lacking in this preparation for the 21st century world economy. Hence it becomes misplaced in the priorities and in the agenda. Instead, the only and greatest emphasis has been in scourging the greatest energy source on earth. When alternative energy, which is a matter of time this decade, become reality? So, a great deal of resources have been spent and wasted with no future benefits, and time has been pushed back. Such is progress and guiding light in the so called free democratically elected society, where plans for the future is in four to eight years time frames.
It should be so clear twenty years ago, that what Singapore, Japan and Korea have been able to accomplish in the 20th century is astounding, but only mere speckle of what China can do and is destined to become. Only in recent years we see how rapid the transformation has been taking place. Bring India and Southeast Asia to the picture, and ?, and ?, and ???? That calls for a new economic system in the west. How does one participate??? That's the key, NOT "competition". It comes from the people, how much zest they have. The government becomes the guide and seer for future generations of the society to "progress" in "stable" taking the right paths. China is fortunate and very lucky to have a succession of governments that can provide this type of guiding light. They were brought up in the 60's and 70's and learned what to avoid. To the West, learn and weep. Definitely it's a case of unpreparedness. Not prepared and not ready to meet the developments. No foresight. Resting too much on its laurels and sitting back as couch potatoes. Too many and too much remember the Chinamen as portrayed in western movies as the laundrymen and Hop Sing the cook, or maybe Charlie Chan the detective. Ohhh!!!, how can they miss, downplay, and ignore what John Templeton observed some 20 years ago.
That's excluding Central Asia and EU, which is the biggest most gargantuan quandary of this development. How to keep them from participating, or delay it. The Silk Roads went from China along three paths to the west. The impact of this revival which is likely to be far more reaching further west could be devastating to you know who. They all in same continent, don't they?
