I told him that if he actually felt as if he were a member of a minority, or wanted to express solidarity with minorities, or just have fun hanging out with minorities, or, most basic, just have fun, then fine, but if he just wanted to tweak them, then my opinion was no.

Seems to me that key to assessing so many of these situations is the question of whether or not someone is trying to tweak someone else. I think your advice was right on target.
