They won't do this, because it would mean the disruption of a business model that they've settled into.

It is going to be very interesting watching how this settles out. It used to be that the Publishers would front the bands to go on the road and build a customer base. Now they are going the MTV route, as you point out. The bands don't make crap off the records, their money is made from the concerts.

The Artists, once they are known, and if they have the business sense, will sell over the Internet from their own sites, or though others. Almost every Artist you can think of now has a site that you can listen/buy from.
