Protectionism has been around forever, hasn't it, Steve

Yes, and so have its adverse consequences. It is abundantly clear that the long-term penalties of protectionism far outweigh the short-term benefits to those protected, but still we are reluctant to act. We want the weak and the powerless to act first, a peculiar position.

The battle for free trade is, in my mind, as important as the war on terror. I wish it would get a fraction of the attention.
