North Korea hasn't invaded any other nation recently. When they last did, 50-some years ago, they did it with the support of the Soviet Union and China. Without that support, their invasion of S. Korea wouldn't have happened. Without a million Chinese troops, N. Korea would not have survived the Korean War.
There is no consensus, today, that N. Korea has violated the minimally acceptable standards among civilized nations. The sanctions the U.S. has imposed, don't work, for the simple reason that most of the rest of the world ignores them. In particular, S. Korea is committed to Sunshine, and China sends oil to N. Korea.
The techniques of Gandhian non-cooperation with evil requires more self-discipline, more willingness to sacrifice for your beliefs, than those who make war.
Since the world is nowhere near that level of self-discipline, wars of self-defense (strictly defined) are a practical stepping-stone, toward a more peaceful world. |
