Should they be expressing "nationalist sentiment" by continuing the Arab failure in nationalized industries? Or work to put the country on a free market footing to encourage investment that the Council, and the occupation, can't (or won't) afford?

They need to move toward a free market footing in a way that will ensure that native Iraqis, who have no capital, are not driven into a marginal position by returning exiles and foreign investors. The charge that the US and the governing council are "selling Iraq" is a powerful thing, and we should not play into the hands of our enemies by allowing them to use that lever.

People are sensitive about these things. Our government certainly understands American reluctance to open our markets - look at the way they kiss the ass of the agribusiness lobby - they should understand that the same political constraints apply, with a lot more reason, in Iraq.
