I was talking on the phone the other day to an American woman who moved back to the US last year, after an extended stay in the little tribal enclave in Northern Luzon where I live now. She has a daughter of the same age as my daughter; they went to first grade together here, and she was assuring me that her daughter was way ahead of her class there. I mentioned that here they still deal with discipline problems by giving the kid in question a whack on the butt with a stick. She told me that in her daughter's school, kids that step out of line are made to sit on "the feelings couch", where they are supposed to "think about their feelings".

It was a while before I linked that up with Monty Python, and realized that the comfy chair has become a disciplinary technique. I don't suppose they poke them with soft cushions, that would be abusive.
