Government promotes marriage as a means of promoting families. In most instances, the persons involved will have children, or blend families, or, having raised a family, find refuge in a late marriage, after death or divorce, to accommodate socialization in the lifestyle. Yes, it does not try to ferret out inappropriate motives for wedlock, because that would be too difficult and consume too many resources, but I think it could, in principal, distinguish between marriage as a union intended to be fruitful, and domestic partnership, even among heterosexuals.

Now, it is true that some homosexual unions will employ modern technology to be fruitful, and that some homosexual couples will adopt. If those practices become widespread, I would hope that society revisited the question of homosexual marriage, if only to promoted greater stability for the children. But for now, I think that it is fine to perpetuate a distinction that continues to put family on a higher plane..........
