Yes. Do minimum wage requirements reflect compassion? I would not really know. They do however mirror some greatest common denominator of the society (or powers in play). To dispense with them, well, in a pretty much similar way one could also do without the penal code - and sheep would lie with lions etc.

But, I guess, this is where probably Jay comes in: you just cant decree morale, ethics and fairness. You (ie government) must leave it to people. Or maybe not - check the much maligned collective bargaining in Germany. Or maybe not not - on the far side of this scale, you may face the big brother or sister taking it in their own hands - minimum wages and everything else -.

[EDIT] darn, I thought Jay's sleeping already, but it's an exciting day all around the globe. I guess I got it right anyhow;
