I would have to know what the specified evil was, and what the derivation of the belief was. Although freedom of conscience is extended to the individual, not all prejudices are a matter of conscience. We do not, for example, recognize someone to be a conscientious objector unless he comes from a religious sect that is pacifist, or can show a coherent philosophical rationale for pacificism. Simple aversion to induction is not enough. Similarly, one has to assess how compelling the state interest is in over- riding a claim. It seems to me that the state may have an interest in compelling treatment, if there is a medical rationale for the massage, but not in compelling recreational masseurs to take all clients........
