The U.N. is incapable of dealing with controversial world crises and winds up either deadlocked to do nothing, or wrings its hands while tyrants carry on with full knowledge that the body will never act. How many U.N. weapons resolutions did Saddam defy, with full confidence that Kofi et al would never bother him?

The U.S. does not have to have U.N. permission or authority to act, nor should it.

Btw, France's cynical insistence that we cede authority to a new Iraqi government within 3 months is particularly laughable in light of France's own modern history. After the allies liberated it in 1946, it was a full year, in 1947, before a new national assembly was elected under Charles de Gaulle, and France was a country that had a pre-occupation, functioning government that could have stepped back in! Unbelievable arrogance and chicanery!
