It comes down to figuring out what can be done within the parameters I have laid out.

I agree. For the individual parent, sometimes home schooling is the only answer; not to get the kids away from the ideologues, but to get them away from the products of parents who cannot or will not provide the guidance children need. Fortunately there are excellent non-religious homeschool curricula available, and if a few parents group together they can provide a lot of the social opportunities that home school kids sometimes miss.

Yes, American parents tend to be much more indulgent.

The problem is not only the way American parents indulge their kids, but the way they indulge themselves. Goes back to the bogus notion of "having it all". Can't be done. Parenting, to be done right, demands major sacrifices, with the career, the social life, and a whole lot of other things as well. You can't do the job if you're not there.
