I remain convinced that that three way alliance was based on current and future contracts.

Here's my superficial estimate of the motives:
- Russia:
50% extension of Cold War power politics,
50% oil
- France:
40% oil,
20% Chirac was a buddy of Saddam,
20% maintaining good ties to the Arab world,
20% anti-Americanism
- Germany:
50% pacifism,
30% business (not oil but industrial sales),
20% maintaining good ties to the Arab world.
Different motives so the "alliance" was a very temporary one. German officials are well aware of that:
