The investment-grade rating of Telex-Chile reflects its control of one of the three facility-based long distance networks in Chile. The company has also experienced robust growth in its Texcom operations, which provides business network services through Latin America and North American telecommunications affiliates. Texcom contributed US$19.6 million of revenues in the first half of 1997. The company was granted one of three nationwide personal communications service (PCS) licenses in Chile during the second quarter of 1997. The Chilean fixed and mobile wireless market has a very low penetration and the prospects for growth for the PCS operation are very good. The PCS operation, Chilesat PCS, has partnered with Qualcomm Incorporated (Nasdaq:QCOM)in a joint venture to offer PCS services throughout Chile. Qualcomm , one of the leading code division multiple access (CDMA) wireless technology leaders, has a 50 percent interest in the venture. In return for this interest, Chilesat PCS received a capital contribution of US$42 million from Qualcomm. As part an effort to streamline its cost structure, Telex-Chile recently announced a work force reduction of 300 employees, representing about 20 percent of its total personnel.
