grace, if there were no social programs for the poor (many of whom have their background square in the ravages of slavery), you may well be dead instead of missing a car. in that case, i'll bet you'd support the programs, right? but we'll never know. i agree there is a better solution than the current one. however, i don't believe your solution is better. nor do i believe it is rational. a rational approach wouldn't "major in the minors." eg, a rational approach would start with "corporate welfare," which costs this country much more money than poverty reduction welfare. what would you want to happen if you and your 9 month old kid were broke with no roof on your head, no education, abusive parents who mistreated you and distorted your world view... would you sit there and understand as your child starved to death... or froze to death... would you be cool with that?
