INTERVIEW-Serbia to grant minerals, gas concessions in '04

By Gordana Kukic

BELGRADE, Sept 19 (Reuters) - Serbia plans to grant concessions next year to mine boron, explore for copper and expand its natural gas network, mines and energy minister Slobodan Ruzic said.

Serbia, reeling from a decade of wars and sanctions under the rule of Slobodan Milosevic, is reforming its communist-style economy to create a favourable climate for foreign investors.

"The lack of a mining law hampered arrival of foreign capital in the sector but this will be changed soon," the acting minister told Reuters late on Thursday, adding that changes were expected by end-year.

"We have already initialled first concessions for the exploration of boron ore and hope to launch an international tender for it in the first quarter of 2004," he said.

Boron is used in a wide variety of material from cosmetics to fertiliser, fibre optics, textiles and rocket fuel.

Foreign firms have already shown interest in the Jadran Do and Pobrdski Potok sites, rich in boron ore, some 200 kilometres south of Belgrade, the minister said.

"Rio Tinto RIO.AXRIO.L and a U.S. firm have said they were interested."
