One set of dictators replaces another; Iraqi governing council bans al-Jazeera, al-Arabia temporarily
Iraq-Regional, Politics, 9/24/2003

The Interim Governing Council in Iraq decided yesterday to ban the correspondents of al-Jazeera and al-Arabia TV stations from covering news of official activities of the council for two weeks, threatening the possibility of closing the offices of the two channels as a punishment for them over what the council described as "biased media coverage under the pretext of broadcasting messages for the toppled Iraqi president Saddam Hussein and other messages for groups threatened to target members of the council."

The spokesman for the council Intiqad Qanbar said that the "governing council reached a decision to close the two channels, noting that there is a debate over ways of arranging that with the coalition forces legally so as to protect the Iraqi people from 'poisonous media campaign' broadcast not only by the two said channels but other Arab TV channels."

Qanbar said "we believe the two stations were the first in provoking sedition in Iraq and also sectarianism and racism as well as campaigning for political violence and for killing members of the governing council and members of the coalition and boosting Saddam's associates and broadcasting pictures for veiled men threatening to kill members of the governing council."

commander of the US forces in Iraq Lt. Gen. Ricardo Sanchez warned the two channels on that their reports encourage violence against coalition forces. Al-Jazeera TV expressed regret over its ban from covering official news. It said "It will continue its work in Iraq until it receives an official copy of the banning decision."

Since Bremer has veto powers over the "Governing Council", what's his position on censorship?

Just wondering.
