Ridgeland, MS, SEP 24, 2003 (EventX/Knobias.com via COMTEX) --

Merrill Lynch noted that the Federal deficit and less intervention by the Japanese to keep the Yen from strengthening may put pressure on the US$ which bodes well for the Medical Technology industry that derives ~40% of sales overseas. Med Tech stks have historically outpaced the broader market avgs when the US$ weakens since secular unit growth of 10% can be leveraged to mid-teen sales growth when there is a currency tailwind. The firm noted that it is easier for companies to provide an upside to earnings when there is a currency tailwind, which is usually therapeutic for the stock. The firm noted that several companies are highly exposed to the Yen, including AVO, BSX, EW, SYK & ZMH.
