As long as you expect some boom/bust, it makes it easieer to handle. You can save up, avoid making big financial commitments at the wrong time, keep a big list of all your contacts and talk to them at least twice a year, etc.

I had a friend who was laid off the day he picked up his brand new Cadillac. He said people at the unemployment office looked at him funny....
