But obviously you DID do this wedding. So you do do weddings on rare occasions.
A wedding is a ritual celebration. As with all rituals, it has ritual elements. In almost every culture that I am aware of, one of the rituals of weddings is that people get dressed up for them. Oh, sure, in the 60s some people tried to do non-ritual weddings, don't dress up, but that, too, was a ritual, just a counter-ritual ritual. But if you look at almost any culture, of whatever religion, you find that the weddings are a time of celebration, and a time of dressing up.
I happen to believe that rituals, as I believe that myths, are an important aspect of any culture and civilization. |
