Dear Iqbal,
Your piece was recommended in an internet forum for Middle Eastern experts. I posted the following in response:

Our Pakistani author is indignant about the case of the Sheikh who issues
fatwas against consorting with Americans but sends his own children to the
US. In Iran this would rank "unnoticeable" on the richter scale of
clerical double standards concerning Islam/West relations. Lets not
forget that Rafsanjaani's children left Iran for "education" (and later,
big business deals aided in no small measure by filial connections) in the
much reviled West during the Iran-Iraq war.
At that time leaving Iran by the young people was castigated from pulpits
as illegal as well as decadent. What Iranian doesn't know that the
privileges of the progeny of the politically connected clergy
("agha-zadeh-ha") are not merely political and financial. They also
include spiritual exemptions from what is considered unlawful, sinful and
repugnant for the masses.

Ahmad Sadri

Dear Ahmad, the only thing I have highlighted is the
two-facedness of our intellectual elite, as a true
believer of boycott Sheikh could have send his
children to ‘Jamai Haqqania’ which produced one eyed
medieval evils like Taliban leader Omar, the brought
shame to every Muslim, for Sheikh to talk about
boycott of USA is highly objectionable since he has
let USA in his home, his family is a product of US
influence, and this is what every Muslim family has to
do instead of listening to his boycott of $ or US
products they should move in to the new world and work
on Jihad -Akbar that of ‘learning and championing the
world of ideas, in the war of ideas Islamic ulemas and
Sheiks have failed, this permanent state of perpetual
struggle is only limited to the poverty stricken areas
of Islam the ‘bin Ladens’ of the world and the
Qadrrawis of the world continue to make their
investments in western world, the best investment of
any person is the future of his child if that is
entrusted by such a tall figure to US than why should
we boycott anything from anyone, let us go an win the
world with openness of our hearts, lets forget this
self inflicting phenomenon of perpetual jihad and lets
make our universities on lines of Oxford and Cambridge
so that Qadrrawis of the world may not have to place
the hub of Islamic ummah on a collision course with
the nation who teaches value of life to children of
Qaddrawi. On issue of Iranian Ulemas I have similar views they are all bunch of hypocrites, Khomeini had send 250,000 of the bluest of Iranian young blood to be butchered on the front of Salamcha, Basra with keys in their neck they drove in thousand wave upon wave to uprootthe dug in well supplied Iraqis, they were cut down by machine gun fire however he the Imam promised them
heavens and a key of heaven was around their necks,
this is sad affair of Islam today Iran or Arab we are
racing towards decadence with our best intention and
efforts. The intentions have been built up by likes of
Imam, Rafsanjani or Qaddrawi.

Thanks Ahmad, best of regards Iqbal
