Portman Corrects Senator John Kerry's Debate Claim
Thursday September 25, 7:01 pm ET

WASHINGTON, Sept. 25 /PRNewswire/ -- Rep. Rob Portman, (R-OH) made the following statement today is response to Senator John Kerry's erroneous statement at today's Democrat debate in New York:
"As a member of the Ways and Means Committee and someone who worked with the president to help make the 10 % tax bracket a reality, I'd like to set the record straight. In today's Democrat debate, Sen. John Kerry said, 'The 10% bracket wasn't George Bush's idea, it was our idea.' Sen. Kerry should check out page 249 of Renewing America's Promise, when back in 1999, then Governor George W. Bush proposed the 10 percent tax bracket, a central proposal in his presidential campaign tax relief package.

"When George W. Bush became the 43rd President of the United States, he kept his word. I and other members of the House Ways and Means Committee, worked with the Bush Administration to make tax relief possible for the lowest income Americans with the 10 percent tax rate. This allows millions of hard working Americans to get out from under the federal income tax altogether. In 2001, we passed a comprehensive tax relief and job creation bill with this provision and President Bush signed it into law. The irony is that Sen. Kerry voted against this legislation. Sen. Kerry and the other Democrat candidates need to check their facts," said Portman.
