re: The WSJ article

"What was printed was this: "The future of that Next technology, which Apple is using for its next-generation operating system, may be in doubt. Mr. Jobs conspicuously avoided mention of Rhapsody in his speech on Wednesday. TO SOME APPLE WATCHERS, THAT WAS A SIGN THAT RHAPSODY MIGHT BE FAR OFF IN THE FUTURE, AND THAT AS PART OF ITS NEW CLOSE RELATIONSHIP WITH MICROSOFT, APPLE MAY LICENSE MICROSOFT'S WINDOWS NT OPERATING SYSTEM." OK, so where's the speculation?"

Apparently the reporters we tool lazy to actually talk to anyone knowlegable about Rhapsody. With at least two builds available at the expo and, presumably, any number of Apple coders, it doesn't appear too much of a reach on my part to expect our intrepid scribblers to do more than ask some anti-Apple, bean-counting analyst about the future of Rhapsody.

If they founnd that too taxing, they could have visited any number of web sites to get a clear picture. Bottom line: Rhapsody is on time and performing as advertised.

Do you really believe that Apple doesn't have a strategy/is directionless, as your post implies? With Jobs hanging around? Do you think that, maybe, we'll get a some sort of announcement when a CEO is selected?

"As they said, core problems- Continued slide in sales and market share (4% of the total new computer purchases is pitiful IMHO), Loss of its technology leadership position, defection of software developers to Windows, hemorrahage of executive and technical talent and finally More Mac or Move to Windows?"

Actually Apple has been gaining a bit of market share lately. It has an installed base of around 28 million with around 50 million users. It still dominates the education, desktop publishing, and graphics markets.

The "hemorrahg(ing) of executive and technical talent" doesn't bother me as much as it appears to bother you. With Rhapsody the OS of the future, Apple has absorbed a lot of new technical talent from NeXT. Also, since Apple appears to pruning its product line, do you think that the personnel departures are all that unreasonable? As for the other executives, are we talking about the same ones who managed Apple into its current predicament?

Regarding software, if I'm not mistaken, recompiling for Rhapsody is supposed to be fairly easy with new tools that will be available. Given that, I expect availability will be better than you'd like for the new OS.

BTW, are you a short seller?

Bob
