Europe's Utopian Hangover

The EU is built on a fantasy

The crisis of the welfare states is not related to the EU.

The EU has discovered, since the autumn of 2001, that it has little ability to determine events

No. To me the problems of overregulation and demography were obvious in the late 80ies. Besides, the EU doesn't want to be a superpower and "determine events" (except some people in Paris).

France received a shock this summer, when more than 10,000 of its elderly citizens died in distress during a heat wave

The number of deaths was 98% lower than during a less severe heat wave 300 years ago. #reply-19256867 This is a huge advance thanks to industrialization.

The 35-hour workweek is splendid, provided you have a job.

Many people around me have a 50- to 80-hour week.

In virtually every industry there are plans to shrink the work force.

What's new? Besides this will increase productivity.

France is set to cut income taxes, though this will raise its deficit to a level strictly forbidden by the rules governing the common European currency

The deficit of France is at about 4% of GDP - the one of the USA at 6%. The USA would fail to qualify for the EU.

Americans should count their blessings, above all the supreme blessing of having an economy that is run by businessmen

Like Bush and Cheney promoting deficit spending?
