I kept leaving and being drawn back into the discussion, so if there were a point where religious motivation was disavowed, I missed it. I have always said that a claim of conscience rested on either a reasonable extrapolation from a recognized religious tradition (you cannot just make it up), or a cogent philosophical viewpoint. Without those, it is whim. Even whim might be indulged in some cases, of course, but it is not a shelter against policy, such as non- discrimination.

Expressing a preference for straight male clients is not, by itself, provocative to any but the most belligerent type of activist.
